5 Reasons You’ll Love Living Near Historic Downtown Manassas
The appeal: Historic Downtown Manassas gives you places to go beyond your own front door: coffee, independent shops, a farmers market and a working train depot with a surprising music connection. If that sounds like your kind of neighborhood, here are five reasons to explore living nearby.
Chris’s take: “Stop by Grounds Central Station for coffee. I love the historic train depot—you can see where Stephen Stills did the album cover, and check out the trains. Honestly, it’s super charming.”

1. You can start with a local coffee stop
My pick is Grounds Central Station at 9360 Main Street. Grab coffee, then make some time to explore downtown. Historic Manassas also lists breakfast items, sandwiches and baked goods, so it can be more than a quick caffeine stop.
Why it matters: When you tour a home, try the surrounding neighborhood too. A coffee stop and a walk can help you picture how you would actually spend time there.
2. The train depot has a story worth stopping for
The Manassas depot at 9431 West Street is part of an active rail station. It also has a place in music history: its platform was the backdrop for the cover of the 1972 album Manassas, featuring Stephen Stills and Chris Hillman. Amtrak’s station history confirms the connection.
I love checking out the depot and the trains. It is one of those details that gives downtown its character. Watch from public areas and follow station signs; this is a working railroad.
3. Historic streets make a simple walk interesting
Historic Manassas’s downtown guide highlights the district’s historic buildings, local shops, restaurants and arts. You can explore storefronts and architecture together instead of treating each stop as a separate drive.
The buyer check: “Near Old Town” can mean different things in a listing. Walk the actual route from a home to the places you care about. Check sidewalks, crossings, parking and how comfortable that route feels to you.

4. The farmers market gives you another reason to head downtown
The Historic Manassas Farmers Market brings local food producers and artisans into the downtown routine. For the 2026 season, the organizer lists Thursday markets at Harris Pavilion through October 29 and Saturday markets at the Prince William Street parking lot through November 21, both from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Check the organizer’s page before going for current details. It is a useful stop when you want to experience downtown while people are out shopping and spending time there.
5. Rail access is part of the neighborhood
The downtown station serves Virginia Railway Express and Amtrak. For buyers whose trips fit those services, being near the station is a practical reason to consider the area.
What to know: VRE is commuter rail, not Metro. Check the current timetable, fares, parking and your final connection before deciding it fits your workday. Proximity alone does not guarantee a short commute. Visit a potential home at different times to assess rail noise, traffic and downtown activity for yourself.

Five questions about living near Old Town Manassas
Where does Chris recommend getting coffee?
Grounds Central Station, at 9360 Main Street. Check its local directory listing and current business information before visiting.
Was the Stephen Stills album cover photographed at the depot?
Yes. Amtrak’s station history identifies the platform as the setting for the cover of the 1972 album Manassas. The station sign appears in the cover photograph.
Can I walk downtown from any home with a Manassas address?
No. A Manassas mailing address covers a much broader area than the historic downtown. Verify the home’s jurisdiction and location, then test the specific walking route rather than relying on the mailing address.
Does Manassas have a Metro station?
The downtown station offers VRE and Amtrak service; it is not a Metro station. Use the operators’ current schedules to plan trips and any transfers.
What should I compare before buying near downtown?
Compare the home’s condition, total ownership costs, parking, actual walking routes and commute. For older homes, review maintenance needs carefully. If you plan exterior changes, check whether the property is subject to historic-district review. My team can help you organize the questions and identify the appropriate local contacts.
