Washington, D.C. has produced presidents, power brokers and political legends—but its celebrity résumé is much more fun than that.

Some of the biggest names in movies, comedy and music were born right here in the District. A few grew up nearby, several went to local schools, and two became so tied to D.C. culture that streets, schools and landmarks now carry their names.

So, before you scroll: How many of these 10 could you have named?

One quick rule: Everyone on this list was actually born in Washington, D.C.—not simply raised somewhere in the DMV.

10. Samuel L. Jackson

Wait—Nick Fury is a Washingtonian? Samuel L. Jackson was born in D.C. in 1948, although he was raised by his mother and grandparents in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Before becoming one of the most recognizable actors alive, Jackson studied marine biology and then drama at Morehouse College. He also served as an usher at Martin Luther King Jr.’s funeral. That is a life story with more plot twists than most of his movies.

9. Jon Bernthal

The Punisher was a Sidwell Friends kid. Jon Bernthal was born in Washington and grew up in Cabin John, Maryland. He graduated from Sidwell Friends School in 1995 before taking a very unconventional road to Hollywood.

Bernthal studied acting in Moscow, played baseball overseas and later earned a graduate acting degree from Harvard. His D.C.-area roots apparently still run deep: in 2026, he reportedly bought a home in Chevy Chase, D.C.

8. Goldie Hawn

Before Hollywood, there was Takoma Park. Goldie Hawn was born in D.C., raised in Takoma Park and graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring.

She studied drama at American University—but left college to run her own ballet school and pursue dance professionally. A few years later, she won an Oscar for Cactus Flower. Not a bad career pivot.

7. Regina Hall

She almost became a journalist instead of an actress. Regina Hall was born and raised in Washington and attended the former Immaculata College High School in Tenleytown.

She later earned a master’s degree in journalism from NYU. Her résumé also included two wonderfully D.C. jobs: taking tickets at DAR Constitution Hall and selling popcorn at the old Mazza Gallerie movie theater.

6. Jeffrey Wright

From Southeast D.C. to Gotham City. Jeffrey Wright was born in Washington, grew up in Southeast and attended St. Albans School before studying political science at Amherst College.

Wright eventually traded politics for acting—and became one of the most respected performers of his generation. His roles range from Jean-Michel Basquiat and Martin Luther King Jr. to Commissioner Gordon in The Batman. He also won a Tony for Angels in America.

5. Taraji P. Henson

This may be the most D.C. origin story on the list. Taraji P. Henson was born in Washington and graduated from Oxon Hill High School before earning her theater degree from Howard University.

While attending Howard and raising her son, she worked as a secretary at the Pentagon by day and as a singing-and-dancing waitress aboard the Spirit of Washington dinner cruise by night. She later moved to Los Angeles with her son—and reportedly only $700.

Your next chapter could start in the DMV.

4. John F. Kennedy Jr.

He arrived in D.C. with the entire country already watching. John F. Kennedy Jr. was born at Georgetown University Hospital on November 25, 1960—just 17 days after his father won the presidential election.

He spent his earliest years in the White House, later became an attorney and launched George magazine. His life ended tragically in a 1999 plane crash at age 38.

3. Dave Chappelle

D.C. didn’t just produce Dave Chappelle—it helped shape his entire act. Chappelle was born in Washington, grew up partly in Silver Spring and graduated from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in 1991.

He started performing stand-up while still a teenager, with his mother sometimes accompanying him to clubs because he was underage. D.C. later honored him with a Key to the City.

2. Marvin Gaye

Before Motown called him the “Prince of Soul,” Marvin Gaye was a Washington kid singing in his father’s church. He was born at Freedmen’s Hospital—now Howard University Hospital—and grew up in Southwest D.C.

Gaye attended Cardozo High School and began his professional career with a D.C. vocal group before moving to Detroit. Today, the city remembers him through Marvin Gaye Park and Marvin Gaye Way.

1. Duke Ellington

There was only one possible ending. Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington was born in Washington in 1899 and grew up in the city’s West End. A childhood friend gave him the nickname “Duke” because of his polished clothes and natural confidence.

Here’s the part that sounds invented: while working as a teenager at the Poodle Dog Café, Ellington wrote his first composition and called it “Soda Fountain Rag.” He went on to become one of the most important composers and bandleaders in American history.
