Is Living Near Metro Worth It If You Commute Only Once a Week?
If you travel to the office only once a week, living near Metro can still be valuable. The answer depends on how often you would use it outside work, whether it could reduce your need for a car, and what you would give up in the home itself.
A recent Northern Virginia Reddit discussion described a familiar tradeoff: a limited office commute, a desire for walkable errands and uncertainty about where to live. Rather than assign one neighborhood to everyone with that schedule, use the following comparison for the actual homes on your shortlist.
Count the trips you really make
Start with a normal week. List the office, groceries, gym, friends, appointments and weekend outings. Mark which trips would realistically use rail, a bus, walking or a car from each candidate address.
Station proximity is most useful when it connects you to places you actually go. A location can be convenient for a rail commute yet less convenient for the rest of your life. Equally, someone who works from home might use Metro regularly for evening and weekend plans.
Do not assume that an address near a station eliminates driving. Build the trip list first, then check whether a one-car or car-free routine is realistic for you.
Compare full monthly costs
Use two real properties rather than a generic claim that one entire town is cheaper. For each, add housing costs, parking, transit fares, connecting transportation and the car expenses you would still have.
Illustration only: suppose one home costs $300 more per month after comparing the same included expenses. If it improves just four office round trips that month, that is $75 per office day before any transportation savings. Those are hypothetical numbers, not a measured Northern Virginia price premium.
Now add the other benefits you would genuinely use: fewer car trips, an easier evening outing or access to errands. You may decide the difference is worthwhile. You may also prefer to use that money for more space or savings. The point is to make the tradeoff visible.
Test door-to-door access
Use Metro’s official website for trip planning, fares, maps and service alerts. Enter the destination and planned travel time. Then account for the walk from the home, station access, transfers and the final walk at the other end.
Visit the route yourself. Look for crossings, sidewalk gaps, hills and whether carrying groceries would change your assessment. Consider lighting and your comfort on the route at the times you expect to use it. A short straight-line distance does not describe the whole trip.
For Arlington, the county’s transportation resources provide additional context on walking, cycling and transit networks. Plans and maps can inform a visit, but confirm what is actually available today.

Keep room for a change in your work schedule
Run the comparison twice: once for your current office routine and once for a plausible increase in required attendance. That is a planning exercise, not a prediction about your employer.
A home purchase is a significant commitment, so it helps to understand which options remain workable if your schedule changes. You do not have to choose the shortest possible commute, but you should know the cost and time implications of the alternative.
Choose the property as carefully as the location
Once the location works, look closely at the home. For a condo or association property, ask about dues, included services, parking rights, maintenance responsibilities and documents available for review. For any home, examine condition and the space you need for remote work.
A station nearby does not establish a property's condition, future resale price or suitability for your budget. Compare relevant homes and the specific features you would be buying. The Crystal City cover photo provides neighborhood context; it is not a claim about an available unit or a building’s finances.
