New Kent Buc-ee’s Opening: Why 2029 Is Not a Confirmed Date
New Kent's planned Buc-ee's has another timeline update, but 2029 should not go on your calendar as a confirmed grand opening. The travel center's schedule is tied to major highway work, and recent news reports give conflicting dates.
Updated September 18, 2026. This article separates the reported store timeline from VDOT's published road-project schedule.
Why the opening year is uncertain
Virginia Business reported September 17 that New Kent extended the performance-agreement opening deadline to December 31, 2029, with a possible additional 18 months for transportation delays. Its report describes a conditional late-2029 target, not a firm opening announcement.
However, WWBT/12 On Your Side reported that Buc-ee's had emailed the station a 2032 opening date. These accounts do not establish one consistent, confirmed date. We are flagging that conflict rather than treating the most appealing headline as settled.
The road project is the key milestone to watch
VDOT's Exit 211 project page, updated September 16, lists the I-64 interchange reconstruction as in design, with an estimated spring 2027 start and fall 2029 completion. It would convert the interchange at Route 106/Emmaus Church Road to a diverging diamond configuration.
Those are estimates for the transportation project. A completed interchange and an open store are separate milestones. Neither an incentives-agreement deadline nor a road completion estimate should be read as a guaranteed ribbon-cutting date.

What this means for Northern Virginia readers
Do not confuse New Kent's I-64 project with the separate Stafford proposal along I-95. Virginia Business reports that Stafford has no confirmed construction or opening date. A milestone in one county does not settle the schedule in the other.
For homebuyers and homeowners, the useful question is how a proposed development could affect a particular address. Look at access roads, the everyday commute, nearby land uses and construction timing. A popular business announcement alone does not establish that surrounding homes will appreciate.
Before making a move around a future amenity, visit the area at the times you would actually travel. Check the county's current plans and road notices, and compare homes on their existing features and recent comparable sales. Treat future conveniences as possibilities until they are operating.

Five common questions
1. Is a 2029 New Kent opening confirmed?
No. It appears as a conditional target in one report, while another reports 2032. There is no consistent confirmed date in the sources reviewed.
2. What is VDOT building at Exit 211?
A diverging diamond interchange at I-64 and Route 106. See the official project page for its current design and schedule.
3. Does finishing the road mean the store opens immediately?
No. Transportation completion and the business opening must be tracked separately.
4. Is this the Stafford Buc-ee's project?
No. New Kent and Stafford are separate projects on different interstate corridors.
5. Should I buy a home because Buc-ee's is planned nearby?
Make the decision around the home's value, condition, location and your needs. Evaluate proposed development as one factor, with its timing and effects still uncertain.
