No VRE Trains to Union Station October 19–23: What Northern Virginia Riders Need to Know

VRE riders will not have service to or from Washington Union Station from Monday, October 19, through Friday, October 23, 2026. Trains will run on a modified schedule, with service to L’Enfant Plaza, Crystal City and Alexandria still available on many trips. Amtrak’s broader service disruption south of Union Station runs October 16–26.

Quick answer: If Union Station is part of your commute, do not rely on your normal schedule that week. Review the official VRE modified schedule, plan a Metro connection from L’Enfant Plaza, Crystal City or Alexandria, and allow extra time.

A recent r/nova discussion captured the initial uncertainty. Some riders focused on the inconvenience; others argued that replacing the aging equipment is worth a short disruption. The important update is that VRE has now published the official schedule, so riders no longer have to guess.

What changes October 19–23 for VRE riders?

Trip What riders should expect
Union Station No VRE trains to or from Union Station during the five weekdays.
Fredericksburg Line mornings Trains 300, 302, 306 and 310 continue to L’Enfant Plaza. Train 314 terminates at Alexandria, where riders can transfer to Metro.
Manassas Line mornings Trains 324, 328 and 330 continue to L’Enfant Plaza. Train 334 terminates at Alexandria.
Afternoon service Southbound trains originate at L’Enfant Plaza or Alexandria depending on the train. Fredericksburg Train 313 riders at L’Enfant and Crystal City use Manassas Train 335 and transfer at Alexandria.

The exact departure times are in VRE’s October 19–23 modified schedule PDF. VRE says all single-ride and multi-ride tickets will be accepted.

Why is the rail outage happening?

Amtrak is temporarily taking the A-Interlocking in the First Street Tunnel out of service. This is the track-and-control point that routes Amtrak and VRE trains between Virginia and Union Station. According to Amtrak’s August 24 announcement, the switches and crossovers are beyond their service life and currently require a 10-mph speed restriction.

Crews plan to replace switches and crossovers, rehabilitate the track base and install modern electric switch systems. Amtrak says the concentrated closure is more efficient than attempting the work in phases inside the confined tunnel.

That is the trade-off Reddit commenters were debating: five difficult commuting days for VRE riders, inside a nine-day Amtrak outage, versus replacing a long-standing bottleneck that can cause delays well after this project is finished.

What changes for Amtrak passengers?

Amtrak’s service adjustments run from after the close of service Friday, October 16, until service resumes Monday morning, October 26. Service north of Washington toward New York and Boston continues, but Virginia and other routes south of Washington face reductions, cancellations, route splits and bus connections.

  • One Norfolk–Alexandria and one Roanoke–Alexandria round trip will operate.
  • Three round-trip buses are timed to connect Alexandria and Union Station.
  • Other express buses will connect Washington with destinations including Richmond, Charlottesville, Roanoke, Norfolk, Newport News, Williamsburg and Virginia Beach.
  • The Carolinian will use a bus bridge between Union Station and Alexandria.

Passengers should use Amtrak’s official Pause for Progress page and check their individual reservation before traveling.

The most practical backup options

  1. Use L’Enfant Plaza when your train serves it. It provides direct access to several Metro lines and is generally the simplest substitute for Union Station.
  2. Transfer at Alexandria when required. King Street–Old Town Metro is about 0.2 miles from Alexandria’s rail station. Amtrak estimates a downtown DC Metro trip at approximately 20 minutes, with trains generally every 8–15 minutes.
  3. Add transfer time. A train-to-Metro or train-to-bus connection is not the same as a normal one-seat ride.
  4. Check the train number—not only the line. Some trains reach L’Enfant while others terminate at Alexandria.
  5. Recheck before departure. Construction plans and operating conditions can change, so VRE and Amtrak should be the final word.

Why this matters when choosing where to live

VRE access is a real quality-of-life factor for buyers considering Burke, Manassas, Woodbridge, Stafford and Fredericksburg. But “near a station” is only the beginning. Buyers should compare the specific train, parking situation, last-mile connection and backup plan they would actually use.

The housing prices along the two VRE corridors are also very different. The figures below are August 2026 compared with August 2025, cover all property types, and are historical monthly statistics—not today’s inventory.

Market Median sold price Active listings Average DOM
Fairfax County $752,250 (-0.4% YoY) 1,985 (+20.3%) 25 days (24 prior August)
Prince William County $599,900 (+5.2% YoY) 916 (+24.3%) 24 days (21 prior August)
Stafford County $545,000 (-0.9% YoY) 502 (+19.5%) 30 days (25 prior August)

Five frequently asked questions

1. Is Union Station completely closed October 19–23?

No. The key point for Northern Virginia commuters is that VRE trains will not serve Union Station during those five weekdays. Union Station and rail service north of Washington continue to operate in other capacities.

2. Will VRE still stop at L’Enfant Plaza?

Yes, several trains on both lines will serve L’Enfant Plaza. Selected morning trains terminate at Alexandria, so riders must verify their train number on the modified schedule.

3. Can I transfer from Alexandria to Metro?

Yes. King Street–Old Town Metro is adjacent to the Alexandria rail station and serves the Blue and Yellow lines. A separate Metro fare may be required.

4. Are the VRE and Amtrak disruption dates the same?

No. VRE’s published modified weekday schedule covers October 19–23. Amtrak’s broader outage and service changes run October 16–26.

5. Will normal service automatically resume October 26?

Amtrak plans to finish before service resumes Monday morning, October 26. Riders should still check VRE and Amtrak alerts before traveling because operating plans can change.
