Start with the outdoors. I would include Prince William Forest Park. The National Park Service lists hiking, picnicking, camping and bicycling among its activities. It is nearby in Triangle, rather than in Woodbridge itself, so plan it as a separate drive.

Then head to Stonebridge. I would stop at Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center for coffee. It's an awesome spot. Use the center's dining directory to choose your stop and check individual business hours.

Finish with an everyday errand. I would do some grocery shopping at Wegmans. Its Potomac store is at 14801 Dining Way in Woodbridge. A visit like this lets you try out part of your potential weekly routine while you are exploring the area.

Two more outdoor options around Woodbridge

• For the river: Leesylvania State Park sits along the Potomac and offers hiking, picnicking, fishing and boating. Pick an activity that fits the time you have; you do not need to turn a neighborhood visit into an all-day itinerary.
• For wildlife: Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge offers wildlife watching, photography and four miles of trails. The refuge's visitor page lists free entrance and seasonal gate hours.
